WebAuthn / Passkey Setup

Set up passkey authentication for passwordless, secure access to your RTC Collector account.

What is WebAuthn?

WebAuthn (Web Authentication) is a modern web standard that allows you to use biometric authentication (fingerprint, face recognition) or hardware security keys instead of passwords.

Benefits of WebAuthn

  • More Secure: Resistant to phishing and credential theft
  • Faster: No need to type passwords
  • Convenient: Use your device's built-in biometrics
  • Privacy-Focused: No secrets are stored on servers

Supported Devices

Desktop/Laptop

  • Windows Hello: Face recognition, fingerprint, PIN
  • Touch ID: On macOS devices with fingerprint sensor
  • Security Keys: YubiKey, Titan Key, or other FIDO2 devices

Mobile

  • Face ID: iPhone X and newer
  • Touch ID: iPhone and iPad with fingerprint sensor
  • Fingerprint: Android devices with fingerprint sensor
  • PIN: All supported devices

Setting Up Your First Passkey

Requirements

Before you begin:

  • You must be logged in with your email and password
  • Your device must support WebAuthn (most modern devices do)
  • Your browser must support WebAuthn (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge)

Setup Process

  1. Go to Settings > Security > Passkeys
  2. Click "Add Passkey"
  3. Enter a nickname for this device (e.g., "iPhone 14", "Work Laptop")
  4. Click "Create Passkey"
  5. Follow your device's prompts:
    • Face ID: Look at the camera
    • Touch ID: Place your finger on the sensor
    • Windows Hello: Use face, fingerprint, or PIN
    • Security Key: Insert and touch your key
  6. Your passkey is now ready to use!
Passkey Created

You can now log in to RTC Collector using your passkey instead of typing your password.

Using Your Passkey to Log In

First-Time Login with Passkey

  1. Go to the login page
  2. Enter your email address
  3. Click "Continue with Passkey"
  4. Authenticate with your device:
    • Use Face ID, Touch ID, Windows Hello, or security key
    • No password needed!
  5. You're logged in

Fallback Options

You can always log in with your password if:

  • Your passkey device is unavailable
  • You're on a different device
  • You prefer password authentication

Managing Multiple Passkeys

You can register multiple passkeys for different devices.

Adding Additional Passkeys

  1. Go to Settings > Security > Passkeys
  2. Click "Add Passkey"
  3. Give each passkey a unique nickname:
    • "Personal iPhone"
    • "Work MacBook"
    • "YubiKey 5"
    • "Home Desktop"
  4. Complete the setup on each device
Recommended Setup

We recommend having at least 2 passkeys registered: one on your primary device and one backup (like a security key) in case you lose access to your primary device.

Viewing Your Passkeys

The passkeys list shows:

  • Nickname: The name you gave the passkey
  • Created: When you registered it
  • Last Used: When you last logged in with it
  • Device Type: Desktop, mobile, or security key

Removing a Passkey

To remove a passkey you no longer use:

  1. Go to Settings > Security > Passkeys
  2. Find the passkey you want to remove
  3. Click "Remove"
  4. Confirm the removal
Don't Remove All Passkeys

If you remove all passkeys while password login is disabled, you'll need to reset your password via email to regain access.

Security Considerations

Passkey Security

  • Biometric Data: Never leaves your device - authentication happens locally
  • Private Keys: Stored securely in your device's secure enclave
  • Syncing: Some platforms (iCloud Keychain, Google Password Manager) can sync passkeys across your devices
  • Phishing Protection: Passkeys only work on the legitimate rtccollector.com domain

Best Practices

  1. Use Passkeys on Trusted Devices: Only create passkeys on devices you own or trust
  2. Keep Backups: Register multiple passkeys in case you lose a device
  3. Update Regularly: Remove passkeys for devices you no longer use
  4. Combine with 2FA: For maximum security, use both passkeys and 2FA

Troubleshooting

"This device doesn't support passkeys"

Your device or browser may not support WebAuthn. Try:

  • Updating your browser to the latest version
  • Using a different browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge)
  • Using a hardware security key instead

"Passkey creation failed"

Possible causes:

  • You cancelled the authentication prompt
  • Your device's biometric sensor failed
  • A browser extension is interfering
  • Try again or use a different authentication method

"Can't find passkey when logging in"

Make sure:

  • You're using the same device where you created the passkey
  • You're using the same browser
  • Passkeys haven't been removed from Settings > Security > Passkeys

Lost Access to All Passkey Devices

If you lose all devices with passkeys:

  1. Go to the login page
  2. Click "Forgot Password?"
  3. Reset your password via email
  4. Log in with your new password
  5. Set up new passkeys on your new devices

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I still need a password if I use passkeys?

Yes, your password serves as a backup login method in case you lose access to all your passkey devices.

Can someone use my passkey if they steal my device?

No. Passkeys require biometric authentication or device PIN, so someone would need both your device and your biometric data or PIN.

Are passkeys synced between devices?

It depends on your platform:

  • Apple: iCloud Keychain can sync passkeys across your Apple devices
  • Google: Google Password Manager can sync passkeys across devices
  • Microsoft: Windows Hello passkeys are device-specific

Can I use the same passkey on multiple sites?

No. Each passkey is site-specific and only works on rtccollector.com.
