Currency & Localization

RTC Collector supports multiple currencies and adapts to your location, making it easy to track your collection's value in your preferred currency.

Supported Currencies

  • GBP (£) - British Pound Sterling (default)
  • USD ($) - US Dollar
  • EUR (€) - Euro
  • JPY (¥) - Japanese Yen
  • AUD (A$) - Australian Dollar
  • CAD (C$) - Canadian Dollar

More currencies will be added based on user demand.

Setting Your Currency

  1. Go to SettingsCurrency
  2. Select your preferred currency from the dropdown
  3. Click Save

All prices throughout the app will display in your chosen currency.

How Currency Conversion Works

Your Collection Data

When you enter item values:

  • Stored in the currency you enter them in
  • Displayed in your preferred currency
  • Original currency is preserved

Example: You enter an item value as £100. If you switch to USD, it displays as ~$125 (using current exchange rates), but the original £100 is still stored.

Marketplace Listings

As a Seller:

  • List prices in any supported currency
  • Buyers see converted prices in their currency
  • Transaction occurs in the listing currency

As a Buyer:

  • See all listings in your preferred currency
  • Converted values are estimates
  • Final charge is in the listing currency (your bank converts it)

Exchange Rates

  • Updated daily
  • Based on market rates
  • Conversion for display purposes only
  • Actual marketplace transactions use Stripe's rates

Currency Display

Collection View

Prices display with appropriate formatting:

  • GBP: £1,234.56
  • USD: $1,234.56
  • EUR: €1.234,56
  • JPY: ¥1,235 (no decimals)

Multi-Currency Collections

If you have items purchased in different currencies:

  • Each item shows in its original currency
  • Total value converts all to your preferred currency
  • Analytics use your preferred currency

Conversion Indicators

When a price is converted, you'll see:

  • Original price in tooltip on hover
  • "≈" symbol indicating it's an estimate
  • Last updated timestamp for exchange rates

Marketplace Currency Handling

Creating Listings

  1. Choose listing currency (defaults to your preferred currency)
  2. Enter price in that currency
  3. Buyers see converted price in their currency
  4. Transaction happens in listing currency

Can't Change Currency: Once a listing is published, you can't change its currency. You can only change the price amount.

Making Offers

  • See listing price in your preferred currency
  • Enter offer amount in listing currency
  • Conversion shown for reference

Payments

  • Charged in listing currency
  • Your bank/card handles conversion to your home currency
  • Bank exchange rates apply (may differ from our display rates)

Analytics & Reporting

Total Value Calculation

Collection total value:

  1. Each item's value in its original currency
  2. Converted to your preferred currency using current rates
  3. Summed for total value

Note: Exchange rates fluctuate. Your collection's total value in your preferred currency may change even if individual item values don't.

Historical Value Tracking

Charts show value over time in your preferred currency:

  • Historical values converted using rates from that date
  • Trends may be affected by currency fluctuations
  • Toggle "Show in original currencies" to see true value changes

Best Practices

Choosing a Currency

Use your local currency if:

  • You primarily buy/sell locally
  • You want accurate tracking without conversion confusion

Use GBP (default) if:

  • You're unsure
  • You participate in international marketplace
  • You want consistency with most users

Entering Values

Be Consistent: Try to enter values in the same currency for easier tracking

Record Original Currency: In item notes, mention if you paid in a different currency

Update Regularly: Currency fluctuations mean converted values change - update item values periodically

Marketplace Tips

List in Buyer's Currency: If you know your target market, list in their currency

Round Numbers: Use round numbers (£100, $50) rather than exact conversions

Factor in Conversion: When buying internationally, remember bank fees and exchange rate differences

Tax Considerations

Different currencies may have tax implications:

  • Report income in your local currency to tax authorities
  • Keep records of exchange rates used
  • Consult a tax professional for international sales

See Account & Billing for more tax information.

Future Features

Coming soon:

  • Custom exchange rate sources
  • Historical rate charts
  • Multi-currency portfolio view
  • Cryptocurrency support (maybe)
  • More currencies (150+ planned)

Troubleshooting

Conversion Seems Wrong

  • Check exchange rates were updated (shown in Settings → Currency)
  • Remember rates fluctuate daily
  • Compare with reliable source (XE.com, Google)

Wrong Currency Symbol

  • Check Settings → Currency is set correctly
  • Clear browser cache
  • Try different browser

Marketplace Price Confusing

  • Remember marketplace prices are set by sellers in their chosen currency
  • Conversion is estimate only
  • Final charge may differ slightly due to bank rates
